Peterborough Home Crime Figures
The Home Office has this week released statistics on an alarming rise in robberies committed since last year’s figures, with a 15 per cent increase in house burglaries alone.
However, Peterborough police have stated they are ‘winning’ the fight against robbery and house burglaries’ yet one house is being broken into every six hours!
A total of over 1,541 houses were burgled last year alone and robbery crimes were being committed at the rate of over one a day.
In trying to fight this alarming crime rate Detective Inspector Neil Sloan has set up ‘Operation Alert’ in a bid to tackle the growing figures.
He has stated that they are “aware of the jump in the figures a long time before they were published by the Home Office” and are doing their utmost to regain control of their area and lower crime rates.
Operation Alert
Peterborough police have so far seen an improvement within the four weeks of setting up Operation Alert and figures from the same period last year have shown that fewer than 30 houses were broken into and robbed.
Julie Spence who is the Chief Constable said “It is encouraging to see that year-on-year crime is down!
On a downward slope though, police records show that detecting and returning stolen property only shows in one of four cases.
Incidents of violent crimes, sexual offences, fraud, vehicle crime and drug offences have however shown a decrease, albeit a small one!
Figures from the Peterborough crime figures for 2008/09 are:
- Overall crime – 22,215 (down 1.5 per cent)
- Violent crime – 4,245 (down 3.8 per cent)
- Sexual offences – 273 (down 2.2 per cent)

Police send Warning Letters to Homes in Northamptonshire
Over 134 houses in the Rushden and Wellingborough areas have been burgled since the 1st June 2009 leading to warning letters being sent to over 1,000 homes to warn them and offer advice on securing their homes.
An insecure or open window has been used by a third of the offenders getting into the homes and during the summer months more people leave doors and window open giving the burglar easy access.
Remember to be alert in your home! Double check all doors and windows before leaving the house and before retiring to bed. Do not leave windows and doors open on sunny days if you are going to be spending time in the garden or upstairs. Lock ALL windows and doors even if you are only popping next door!
